Summary
In The Apothecary Diaries Season 1 Episode 20 things get intense! The episode begins with Maomao waking up in Jinshi’s room, wrapped in bandages. Turns out she was injured and ended up there. Suiren, a friend of hers, tells her why she is there and serves her some tea.
Suiren then takes Maomao to a meeting with Jinshi, Gaoshun, and Basen. Jinshi asks Maomao why he went to a ceremony and how he knew something bad was going to happen. Maomao tells the truth about a plan to hurt a nobleman and connects it to some past cases.
He also talks about some things stolen at the ceremony and a goldsmith who could be involved. Maomao believes that the goldsmith did not know what he was doing and was just doing a job. She believes the person who hired him knew the secret behind making the special metal for the ceremony.
Jinshi and Maomao talk a little about what should happen to the goldsmith. Maomao then begins to wonder why Jinshi was at the ceremony and what would have happened if the bad guys had succeeded.
He even thinks Suiren might have something to do with it. Later, Suiren tells Maomao that Lihaku wants to talk to her. Lihaku tells Maomao that Suiren was involved in some bad things and that she is now dead.
He says she drank poison and the doctor confirmed it. But Maomao is not convinced that Suiren did it alone. Maomao works with Suiren again but keeps wondering if Suiren could have done it alone.

She talks to Jinshi about this and asks him to take her to the morgue to talk to the doctor who did Suiren’s autopsy. At the morgue, Maomao asks the doctor if the poison contains something called thorn.
He remembers a hill where he talked to Suiren and wonders if it had thorn plants. The doctor isn’t sure, but Maomao thinks it could be important. Maomao opens Suiren’s coffin and finds that there is no Suiren inside! The doctor swears that he saw Suiren’s body, but Maomao doesn’t believe it.
She thinks they could have tricked the doctor into not looking closely enough. Jinshi wonders why they changed Suiren’s body, but Maomao believes that Suiren faked her death using some special medicine. This medication can make people appear dead for a time.
Maomao points to a nearby empty coffin, where she believes Suiren is sleeping instead of dead. Maomao explains how Suiren and her friend flipped this cunning switch. Now Maomao is eager to meet Suiren again and perhaps learn more about the medicine she used.
Meanwhile, Jinshi is dealing with his drama. He is thinking about Suiren’s case and also her connections with Maomao and Luolan. He talks to Gaoshun about family matters and even considers finding a girlfriend.
Jinshi and Gaoshun visit Luolan and talk about their connection to the royal family. Although the Emperor may not be interested in her, Luolan is still important due to her ties to the Empress Dowager.
Later, Jinshi talks to Lady Gyokuyou, who is having health problems. He tells Maomao to go to the back palace to help Gyokuyou.
Maomao thinks Gyokuyou might be pregnant, but then changes her mind. She finishes her chores in the back palace and leaves, still pondering the mysteries. At the Verdigris House, Lihaku hears some gossip about someone leaving. This news hints that more trouble is brewing.
