A14 reopens after fatal motorhome crash near Brampton

A major road in Cambridgeshire has been closed after a motorhome crashed today (Saturday, 20 May), leaving a woman dead. The A14 was closed to traffic in both directions following the accident at around 10am.

The road was closed between junction 22 with the A1 in Brampton and junction 21 with the A141 in Brampton Services. Traffic monitoring site Enrix said it was caused by an accident involving a motorhome.



The road was opened shortly before 1.30 pm and now traffic is normal. One lane was closed for a short time after a car broke down in stationary traffic.

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “We were at the scene of a fatal collision on the A14 at Brampton Interchange involving a single vehicle. We were called just before 10.40am to a report of a collision where sadly That a woman has died.”

“The road was closed in both directions, but has since been reopened. Further information will be proactively released in the coming days.”

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “We are at the scene of a fatal vehicle collision on the A14 at Brampton Interchange.

“We were called just before 10.40 am with information about a collision where sadly a woman has died.

“The road was closed in both directions, but has since been reopened.

“Further information will be actively released in the coming days.”

National Highway Update

A National Highways spokesman said: “The westbound A14 between J22 (A1) and J21 (A141) has reopened following a previous collision.

“All lanes are open and traffic is flowing freely.”

Both the eastbound and westbound carriageways are open.

Enriques said recovery work is being carried out following an earlier accident involving a motorhome.

Air ambulance reached the spot.

The westbound carriageway remains closed with slow traffic and diversions.

Delay Time

National Highways are reporting that currently there is a delay of at least 10 minutes against the expected traffic.

Traffic is expected to return to normal between 1 pm to 1.15 pm today.

Eastbound carriageway reopens

According to Enriques, the eastbound carriageway has now reopened. The westbound carriageway remains closed.

The wrecked car has been removed from the westbound queues. The road is still congested with some steady traffic.

An update at 12.15 pm from traffic monitoring site, Inrix, said a car in the westbound queue broke down. It said: “Westbound queues were not delayed by a broken down car which is blocking lane one (of three).”

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The A14 in Cambridgeshire is closed westbound between J22 (for the A1) and J21 (for the A141) due to a motorhome colliding. Cambridgeshire Constabulary, along with National Highways traffic officers are at the scene which are to assist in traffic management.

“There’s about 1 mile of congestion on the way to the closure.” The diversion routes are as follows:

  • Traffic is advised to take the A14 northbound to the A1 exit
  • Exit A1 North at Brampton Huts Interchange
  • Take the 1st exit on the A141 and rejoin the A14 at J21
