Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is reportedly in talks for a role in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The publication’s sources claim that Ortega is being sought to star as Lydia, the daughter of Winona Ryder from the 1988 original. It has also been claimed that production on the long-shot sequel is planned to begin in May or June this year, with Tim Burton expected to helm and Michael Keaton set to return.
Representatives for Warner Bros. and Ortega have not commented on the report.
Talks of a Beetlejuice sequel have been ongoing since the 1988 original, but it looks like Beetlejuice 2 has been slowly inching closer to reality over the past decade. After having teased in 2011, Michael Keaton admitted that he was in talks with Tim Burton in 2014, and in 2017 Burton confirmed that a sequel was “closer than ever”. A script for Beetlejuice 2 was reportedly rewritten in 2017 by Rememori writer Mike Vukadinovich.
News of Ortega’s potential role in Beetlejuice comes as she currently hits the big screen with Scream VI, which IGN’s 9 out of 10 review said is even better than the previous film.
