The 68-year-old Hong Kong actor co-starred with Chris Tucker in the first three films in Brett Ratner’s action comedy film franchise.
Another “Rush Hour” film is in the works, according to Jackie Chan.
During an on-stage presentation at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the 68-year-old Hong Kong actor said that he was in talks for a fourth chapter of the buddy action comedy franchise.
According to Deadline, he informed the audience on Thursday, “We’re talking about ‘Rush Hour 4’ right now.”
The martial arts veteran also stated that he was meeting with the film’s director that evening to discuss the script, however he did not name the director.
All three previous movies of the “Rush Hour” franchise, which starred Chan as a top Hong Kong investigator and Chris Tucker as a wisecracking LAPD officer working together to investigate worldwide crimes, were directed by Brett Ratner. The two co-starred in the 1998 film “Rush Hour” and its two sequels, “Rush Hour 2” (2001) and “Rush Hour 3” (2003). (2007).
Ratner’s most recent picture was 2014’s “Hercules.” Warner Bros. cut relations with the filmmaker in 2017 after six women, including Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge, accused him of sexual assault and harassment.
During his participation at the film festival, Chan revealed that he expected “Rush Hour” to bomb at the box office and had intended to leave Hollywood.
“I tried so many times to go to Hollywood, but I said no more Hollywood because my English isn’t excellent, they’re not my culture, and they don’t appreciate this kind of action,” he told the audience.
The “Rumble in the Bronx” star admitted that he was hesitant to embark on the job at first.
“My manager told me, ‘Look, there’s a script called ‘Rush Hour.’ ‘No, Hong Kong police?’ I said. It’s not going to happen.’ ‘Jackie, why don’t you try again?’ he said. ‘OK, this is the last time,’ I said.”
Chan went on to explain that after the film was out, he received a call from Ratner and Tucker. They informed him, “We’re a great success, dude. We’ve reached 70 million people in the first weekend.”
“I don’t even know what 70 million is,” Chan admitted. “I’m not familiar with the box office. I just know it’ll be a huge success.”
“And then they made part 2 and part 3,” he added.
“Rush Hour” was a huge movie office success, making $244 million worldwide. The film’s two sequels were likewise worldwide commercial hits, with “Rush Hour 2” grossing $347.3 million and “Rush Hour 3” grossing $258 million.
