Only 2,000 people will attend King Charles’s coronation on May 6, but the event’s reach will far exceed that of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.
King Charles is also planning to break with an old royal tradition by inviting foreign monarchs.
According to historian and royal commentator Dr Ed Owens, the technological advances in mass communication experienced over the past seven decades will have an impact on the upcoming event.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “In terms of the reach of this event, it’s going to be much bigger than Elizabeth II’s coronation.
“It’s going to play out to a world audience through a lot of different media channels, especially international broadcasters, as well as the Internet,” he said.
Dr Owens said social media would bring a “new dimension” to the coronation, allowing people to experience it differently to the Queen’s coronation audience.
He added: “And what social media also enables is for spectators of the event to participate, as they engage with each other, sharing their views on the revealing ceremony.
It is still unclear whether Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Princess Diana’s brother Charles Spencer will attend the event.
