The Story Behind the Anime

Let This Grieving Soul Retire is based on the light novel series Nageki no Borei wa Intai Shitai: Saijaku Hunter ni Yoru Saikyo Party Ikusei-jutsu, written by Tsukikage with illustrations by Chyko. The story originally started as a web novel in 2018 before being picked up by Micro Magazine. There’s also a manga adaptation by Rai Hebino, which is licensed by Yen Press for English readers.

The plot revolves around a treasure hunter named Krai. Even though Krai’s friends seem destined to achieve their childhood dream of becoming the greatest, Krai himself feels tired and just wants to retire from the adventures.

However, things don’t go as planned, and he has to continue living up to everyone’s high expectations, despite feeling like he’s not as strong as the others. It’s a mix of humor and drama as Krai struggles with being seen as “mediocre” in a world full of heroes.
