Here’s what we know so far. The movie will open in Japan on December 20. It’s based on a 2013 novel by Kazuhisa Sakaguchi. The story focuses on Hansuke Doi losing a battle and Sonnamon and Zatto Konnamon becoming teachers at Ninjutsu Academy.

We’ll also see some familiar voices in the film. Minami Takayama returns as Rantarō, Mayumi Tanaka as Kirimaru, Teiyū Ichiryūsai as Shinbei Fukutomi, and Toshihiko Seki as Hansuke Doi. Masaya Fujimori, who directed the previous film, is back to direct this one too. Ajia-do, the studio behind the TV series, is handling the animation. Sakaguchi, the original novel writer, is writing the screenplay.

The last Nintama Rantaro film, Gekijō-ban Anime Nintama Rantaro Ninjutsu Gakuen Zenin Shutsudō! no Dan, came out in March 2011. It’s been a while, but fans have stayed loyal. The 31st series of the Nintama Rantaro anime premiered in April 2023, and the 32nd series just started earlier this month.

For those who don’t know, Nintama Rantaro is based on Soubee Amako’s manga, Rakudai Ninja Rantarō. It’s about Rantarō, a ninja apprentice at an elite ninjutsu academy in historical Japan. As young students, Rantarō and his friends are called “Nintama,” a mix of “ninja” and “tamago” (which means “egg” in Japanese).

The manga first inspired the Nintama Rantaro TV anime back in 1993. Even today, you can catch the 10-minute episodes every weekday on the NHK-E channel. The franchise also includes two previous anime films and two live-action films, with the first one directed by Takashi Miike.
