Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom Anime Film Smashes Box Office, Debuts at #2

The new Overlord anime film, titled Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom, had an impressive opening weekend in Japan. The film ranked at number two, which is quite an achievement! In its opening weekend, the movie sold 198,000 tickets and earned about 317.8 million yen, which is close to $2.19 million in U.S. dollars.

Early Screenings Boosted the Numbers

Before its official release on September 20, the movie had early IMAX screenings starting on September 13. When you include these early showings, the total number of tickets sold rises to 270,000, and the film’s total earnings hit 457 million yen, which is about $3.15 million! Those IMAX screenings really helped boost its success.

The Overlord film was directed by Naoyuki Itou, who has worked on previous Overlord projects. Fans of the series will be happy to know that many of the key staff from earlier seasons returned to work on the film. Good news for fans outside Japan! Crunchyroll will bring Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom to theaters in North America on November 8.
