Angela Bassett has just done it again. After being name-dropped by Ariana DeBose at BAFTA Film Awards opening wrap, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star explains Diversity that she later reached out to DeBose to check up on him.
“I DMed her last night. I did. It was beautiful,” Bassett told Diversity Senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson on the red carpet at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday evening. “I just wanted to make sure she’s okay because, you know, it’s going to get a lot of attention. And she’s A-OK.”
Bassett was mentioned in one of the catchy lyrics of DeBose’s early song. DeBose, who won last year’s BAFTA and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “West Side Story,” opened the British Academy Film Awards on Feb. 19 with a wrap, which was attended by the evening’s nominees, including directors. Many names have been removed. Women in the first film honored and competed in both the lead actress and supporting actress categories. The production also includes renditions of “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” and “We Are Family”.
In the days that followed the number took on a life of its own on social media, garnering a wide range of reactions between sarcastic remarks and warped but wholehearted appreciation.
DeBose’s official Twitter account has been deactivated since the incident. However, the actor acknowledged the situation on Saturday morning with a post on Instagram: “Internet is wild y’all! Appreciate all the love.
in an interview with DiversityBAFTA award producer Nick Bullen called criticism of DeBose’s performance “incredibly unfair” and detailed the musical direction and choreography that went into the number: “Everyone I’ve spoken to who was in the room absolutely loved it. Was.”
Bassett has been nominated for the Entertainer of the Year Award at the NAACP Image Awards. During a virtual ceremony earlier this week, she was honored with the Bodie Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
