Fifth-grader Nobita Nobi consistently receives failing grades in his classes as a result of his lethargy and is ridiculed by Suneo Honekawa and Takeshi “Gian” Goda. Sewashi, his great-great grandson from the 22nd century, visits Nobita’s timeline with his robotic cat Doraemon. Sewashi monitors Nobita every day. Sewashi warns Nobita that if he continues his behavior, his future would be disastrous: he will wed Gian’s sister Jaiko, have his own business destroyed, and be left with a big debt. To get around this, he instructs Doraemon to assist Nobita while altering Doraemon’s nose to stop him from going back in time until Nobita has a brighter future.

Doraemon introduces his tools to help Nobita despite his reluctance up until the threat, which is a huge benefit to him. Nobita asks Doraemon to assist him in winning over his crush despite Doraemon’s advice to avoid becoming overly reliant on technology. Nobita will wed Shizuka Minamoto, as revealed by Doraemon, if his future is changed. But despite all his attempts, Shizuka ends up becoming closer to Hidetoshi Dekisugi, the top student. Nobita resolves to let go of Shizuka in order to make her happier after failing in his attempt to be equal to Dekisugi by studying more. He accomplishes this by flipping Shizuka’s skirt to expose her underwear (without looking at it), which causes Shizuka to scream, hold her skirt down in shame, hit him, and flee in tears. After some time, Shizuka discovers that Nobita was unconscious when he assaulted her. She begins to worry for Nobita as a result of this.

Shizuka arrives at the Nobi home and rejects Nobita’s people-repelling potion to help him, which Doraemon reveals is the first step in Nobita and Shizuka’s growing relationship to eventually becoming a couple. She overhears Gian and Suneo discussing how Nobita’s self-esteem got crushed by Sensei for recently failing another test, leading her to believe he is planning to commit suicide.

He drinks a Doraemon-given remedy out of rage, and as a result, everything the consumer says turns out to be false. After completing his payback against Gian (who was being carried away by his mother who was preparing to punish him) and Suneo (who was being chased by a dog trying to bite him), Nobita returns home while bemoaning the fact that Doraemon will never come back. Doraemon unexpectedly makes his way back and informs Nobita that he has been given permission to stay with him. Nobita claims that he had predicted that Doraemon would never return while still under the influence of the potion, and that prediction has now come true. They embrace and cry joyfully together.
