Whenever you watch anime, do you see characters with similar personalities and attitudes towards their loved ones? So you’re probably familiar with the Japanese word “Correct“, which comes from the phrase”right right“, What does it mean “Love me“. You can recognize five major types of tentacles in anime or manga: derederer, tsundere, yandere, Kudere And dandare,
However, did you know that there are many more types of these types of characters? Some are extensions of existing personalities you’ve probably never heard of. Others may be interchangeable as a character may have more than one “type of authority”. This is as good a time as any to break down all the ways anime characters express their love and affection.
derederer
- Example: Yui Yuigahama (oregairu, Clara Valek (Marimashita! Iruma-kun,
Deirdre’s characters are very energetic, kind and affectionate towards others. Of all the personality types, they are the most stable and are the main characters. Although, they show their affection towards their beloved, still they can maintain normal relations with others.
A more refined variant of the deredere type is the “ozodere”, which exudes a calm and collected ladylike demeanor with others. They are strict towards themselves from outside, but sweet from inside. An extreme example of someone with strong Deredere vibes is “Megadere”, who constantly showers her lover with admiration and affection almost to the point of sick obsession.
tsundere
- Example: Taiga Aishaka (Toradora), Asuka Langley (Neon Genesis Evangelion,
If you’ve ever heard the phrase “Not that I intended, baka” one of two “not that i cared about you“With a puffy face, then you’re probably familiar with Tsundere. She’s a cold and hostile person on the outside, but sweet and kind to the right people on the inside. This is probably the most recognizable type of possessiveness.
Song “hot and cold” Of katy perry This perfectly describes the ever-changing nature of a Tsundere as they may be in the process of sorting out their feelings and how the people in their life react to them. One day they matter to you and the next day they are affectionate.
yandere

What if someone with the Dereidre personality suddenly took a dark turn? That’s basically yandere. At first, they are very affectionate and loving towards their partner, until it becomes a constant obsession for them. This leads the yandere to become overprotective, violent and psychotic towards those she perceives as a threat to her partner’s happiness and well-being. If they feel they are being disrespected, they may even hurt their loved one to protect themselves.
dandare
- Example: Mikuru Asahina (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Hinata Hyuga (Naruto,
Dundere are shy, quiet and anti-social people in most situations. They remain calm to avoid controversy. Despite their reserved nature, these introverts open up and show their true side when alone with the right person or group.
Kudere
- Example: Ri Ayanami (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Canadian Tachibana (Angel Beats!,
As his name suggests, Kudere is always calm. Even in the most stressful situations, they always remain calm and collected. They never panic and remain detached and analytical till the end. Unlike Dundere, they rarely show affection or emotion towards others in any given situation, but may hide their true feelings in the background.
An extreme example that takes this trait further is Shundere, who becomes emotionless due to being sad or depressed all the time. They rarely interact or socialize with others and tend to hide their true feelings more deeply than Kudere.
Bakadere
- Example: Yoshiko Hanabatake (oh girl, Yuko Yoshida (Machikado Majoku,
Also known as an airhead, Bakadere is clumsy, stupid, and often lacks common sense when it comes to dealing with things in his life. Their optimistic outlook helps them to be kind to others when they don’t even know it. The charm of a Bakadere character is their carefree and childlike innocence, which often makes them the butt of ridicule or exploitation. They can also cause a lot of trouble to the protagonist.
Mayadere
- Example: Yami (to love Ru Darkness, Juvia Lockser (fairy tale,
La mayadère is usually the antagonist or deuteragonist of a series. After a situation arises that makes them fall in love with the protagonist, they go to his side to help him. Although they appear hostile or intimidating at first, a change of heart allows them to later reveal their true feelings to the protagonist.
nyandere

Nyandre loves cats to such an extent that they are a part of her. They might as well be real cats who always use “nyan” at the end of their sentences. A Nyandere character often adopts feline instincts when showing others their right side through imaginary fangs or cat ears. They can also be emotionless people who show their true selves whenever they meet a feline.
biokidere

Byokidere are kind and good-natured characters who suffer from a fatal, life-threatening disease or condition. They often befriend the protagonist to give them perspective or purpose, and their impending death is often used to motivate them. However, in some cases, they miraculously recover and go on to live their lives with the protagonist.
Sadodere
- Example: Kurumi Tokisaki (date a live, Himiko Toga (boku no hero academia,
Sadodere likes to play with the feelings of his loved ones and takes pleasure in manipulating and humiliating their feelings. They are violent and cruel towards others and lack the empathy to connect with. Unlike Yandere, who does it as a form of protection, possibly her greatest pleasure is the choice to voluntarily inflict pain on her lover.
A character who takes pleasure in tormenting or humiliating himself is the Masodere and they are masochists who complement the Masodere quite well. Characters who display both characteristics are called sadomasoedere.
hiakasudere
- Example: Takagi (Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san, Hayase Nagatoro (Ijiranide, Nagatoro-san,
A hiyakasudere is a character whose jokes are usually lighthearted and flirtatious. They are outwardly mischievous and playful, constantly teasing their loved ones as a show of affection. Sometimes these characters may also display tsundere or tomboy personality traits, enjoying their lover’s annoyance.
goudere
- Example: Ikaros (sora no otoshimono, Tohru (Kobayashi-san Chi no Made Dragon,
A goudere is a man who exerts himself greatly, who treats his partner as his master and will do anything for him or her. They have a highly idealized image of their partner and will stop at nothing to make them happy no matter what they think. This can lead to hilarious and sometimes disastrous situations for the cast.
An extension of this personality trait is Undere, who is basically the one who says yes to his partner’s orders. Regardless of the consequences, their steadfast devotion doesn’t allow them to betray their loved ones so easily.
Hazidere

For someone who is very shy or nervous when she is with the person she likes, Hajidere knows how to socialize with everyone except her. They have difficulty admitting this to the person they love and often blush or faint when they see him make the first move.
Bodere, which is a combination of dandere and tsundere, performs the same functions as jajidere. The big difference is that they strike more aggressively than their mates.
Himedere / Ojidere / Kamidere

Hindere

A Nemuidere is one who is always lazy and sleepy. They simply prefer to get enough sleep and have to be inspired by other people to do something. Daruderes are also too lazy to do anything unless told to do so by someone they really care about. These characters usually show a hidden side of power that makes them great allies.
Kanadere

Anyone who is a Canadare is basically admitting that he is a gold digger. They only take an interest in someone based on their status and wealth, ignoring anyone else unless they can take advantage of them. However, if they meet the right person, they can learn to look beyond the money and appreciate the person they really are.
kekkondere

Anyone who believes in love at first sight and wants to get married immediately is a Kekkondere. Their insistence on getting married stems from a deep desire to be close to the person they know, for good or bad. They can be creepy and determined to the point of becoming yandere’s. Ultimately, Kekkondere want someone special to spend the rest of their lives with, and when the time comes, they will find the right person.
yottadere

Yottadere are very fond of the drink. They can become very angry or irritable or fall asleep in a corner when drunk. Some Yottaderes reveal a part of themselves when intoxicated and are often sober in the presence of someone they care about.
