Crunchyroll Users Shocked: Comments Disappear Overnight

Anime fans have strong opinions. They love to debate about episodes, argue over who would win in a fight, and show off their favorite characters. One popular place for these discussions was the comments section on Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll is a top streaming service for anime. They have shows like One Piece, Demon Slayer, and My Hero Academia. Fans loved using the comments section to talk about episodes. But, as of early July 2024, Crunchyroll has removed the comments section. Fans are upset and want to know why this happened.

The official reason from Crunchyroll is about safety. They said, “At Crunchyroll, we prioritize creating a safe and respectful community environment. To maintain this standard, we are removing all existing user-generated content, including comments, across all our platforms and experiences.” They want to keep the community respectful and safe.

However, fans are not happy with this explanation. On Reddit, a user said, “I always look forward to reading comments after each episode I watch and see people relating to what I feel while watching any anime.” Another fan added, “I find it absolutely ridiculous that they won’t just properly moderate it instead of axing it entirely.”

Some fans think there might be other reasons for the removal. A few believe it happened because one of the new series was review-bombed due to bad subtitle translations. Others think the translations were done by AI, causing awkward dialogue.

Normally, people might be happy to see comments sections removed because they can be toxic. But for Crunchyroll users, the comments were a big part of the community. Fans used them to share their love for anime and connect with others. Now, they are asking Crunchyroll to bring the comments back.

Fans can still talk about anime on other social media, but losing the comments on Crunchyroll feels like a big loss. The removal might be doing more harm than good to the anime community.

Crunchyroll’s decision to disable and delete comments has sparked a lot of discussions. The platform hasn’t given a detailed reason behind the decision, which has led to more theories and disappointment among users.

Some believe a recent incident involving a homophobic comment on a new show might have influenced the decision. But it’s unclear if this was the main reason or if Crunchyroll was already planning this move.

On social media, fans have expressed their disappointment. One user wrote, “Dang. I always liked scrolling down to the comments right after finishing an episode.” Another said, “Why would they do that? Talking with people in the comment section was fun tbh.” A third user added, “ngl comments could sometimes be a highlight after an ep drops.”

Fans who have used Crunchyroll for years are especially sad. One long-time user said, “Noooo I had Crunchyroll since 2012 and I love the comment section. I like finishing an episode and checking others’ opinions in the comments.” Another asked, “I wonder why.”

The comments section was a favorite feature for many fans. They are now hoping Crunchyroll will listen and bring it back.
