Shueisha, the famous publisher, announced on Friday that Kōcha Agasawa’s popular manga, Koori no Jyōheki (also known as The Ramparts of Ice or Ice Castle Wall), is getting a TV anime adaptation. To celebrate this exciting announcement, Agasawa even shared a special illustration. Fans of the series are already buzzing with excitement!
The manga first started as a webtoon on the LINE Manga app back in January 2020 and ran until April 2022. It became so popular that Shueisha decided to publish it in book form. The 14th and final volume of the manga is set to release on February 4, wrapping up the story for readers. But don’t worry, the anime adaptation means the story will come to life in a whole new way!
So, what’s The Ramparts of Ice all about? The story revolves around Koyuki Hikawa, a high school student who finds it hard to connect with others. She builds a wall around herself, keeping people at a distance. Despite her aloof nature, a boy named Minato Amemiya keeps trying to get closer to her. The manga follows the lives of four teenagers – Koyuki, Minato, a popular girl named Miki, and a laid-back boy named Yōta. It’s a heartfelt and sometimes frustrating story about youth, relationships, and personal growth.
The manga has already won the hearts of many readers. In December 2023, it ranked #15 for male readers in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga Is Amazing!), a well-known guidebook. It was also nominated for the 69th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2023. Earlier, in May 2023, it came in second place in the “Vertical Scroll Comic” category at the Rakuten Kobo E-book Awards. And if that wasn’t enough, it ranked #2 in AnimeJapan’s 2023 poll for the “Most Wanted Anime Adaptation.” Clearly, fans have been eagerly waiting for this anime!
This isn’t the only exciting news for Kōcha Agasawa fans. Another one of her works, You and I Are Polar Opposites, is also getting a TV anime adaptation. That anime is set to premiere in January 2026 and will be produced by studio Lapin Track. Agasawa’s talent for creating relatable and engaging stories is clearly making waves in the manga and anime world.
For those who haven’t read The Ramparts of Ice yet, now is the perfect time to dive in before the anime comes out. The manga is available in English digitally on MANGA Plus, and Viz Media also publishes it in English. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Agasawa’s work, this anime adaptation is something to look forward to!
Stay tuned for more updates on the anime’s release date, cast, and studio. One thing’s for sure, Koyuki’s icy walls and Minato’s determination to break through them are about to capture even more hearts on the small screen!
