The Real Reason Masashi Kishimoto Added Aliens In Naruto, Explained

The climactic revelations in Naruto about Kaguya Otsutsuki and her connection to chakra and the Ten-Tails beast came as a narrative shock to many fans. While divisive, these twists fundamentally recontextualized the shinobi world by introducing an extraterrestrial origin.

Specifically, the tremendously powerful Ten-Tails that threatens the world of Naruto is revealed to contain Kaguya. Through flashbacks, we learn that Kaguya was the first being in this world to exert chakra, which he obtained by eating the fruit of the God Tree.

The most surprising thing is that Kaguya was originally from another completely different world: she was literally an alien.

This revision of the story leading up to the aliens was likely driven by narrative necessity regarding the escalation of power in the war arc rather than creative vision.

That is to say, the extremely formidable abilities displayed by Madara Uchiha as the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki may have cornered Kishimoto.

Presenting Kaguya as an even greater threat from the stars raises the stakes while also avoiding the need to further inflate Madara’s power to even more unreasonable levels.

Kaguya Otsutsuki’s unexpected appearance was solely due to Madara being overpowered

As Naruto raced towards his climax, most fans anticipated that Madara or Sasuke would emerge as the ultimate adversary. Instead, Kishimoto shocked audiences by abruptly introducing Kaguya Otsutsuki to defeat Madara and become the villain of the series finale.

While completely unexpected, attentive readers may have spotted clues that foreshadow Kaguya’s role. Specifically in chapter 216, Sound Ninja Five’s Kimimaro displays the Shikotsumyaku kekkei genkai that allows bone manipulation, an ability later exhibited by Kaguya herself.

The accompanying chapter text reveals that Kimimaro comes from the “Kaguya clan,” hinting at a deeper connection.

Additionally, the Kaguya clan’s clothing and markings closely resemble Kaguya and her Otsutsuki clan members.

In retrospect, this early parallel between names and power seems indicative of the initial basis for Kaguya’s eventual prominence.

However, it remains ambiguous when precisely Kishimoto conceived his character and the importance of the arc. Despite rumors, there is no evidence that the introduction was forced by cornering himself with Madara’s excessive force.

More reasonably, Kaguya may have emerged as a convenient common ancestor to perpetuate the battle through Boruto.

The cosmic origins of Kaguya Otsutsuki

Kaguya originates from an alien clan called Otsutsuki, who are essentially celestial beings who traverse worlds planting divine trees to harvest chakra as a source of energy.

Although born at a low rank within the clan’s hierarchy, Kaguya rebelled against her companion and decided to eat the fruit of his planted Divine Tree herself, granting her incredible power from the dense inner chakra.

This transformative event turned Kaguya ruthlessly violent as she took control of the world.

Over time, Kaguya gave birth to two sons, who inherited a portion of her chakra abilities. As she sought to recover this scattered chakra, her children were forced to band together to fight and seal her to end her tyranny.

A son named Hagoromo would continue his chakra lineage, using it to promote peace in the early origins of ninja society.

Although his intentions were kind, the ninjutsu arts and culture he introduced were easily weaponized over generations.

Thus, we see that Kaguya’s once-forbidden action of concentrating the power of the fruit of the God Tree for herself sets in motion a cascade of world-altering events.

Her chakra passed through bloodlines that fueled changes that encompassed conflicts between her and her progeny, as well as the lingering tensions between ninja clans vying for dominance.

While injecting a backbone of alien mythology may seem completely absurd into Naruto, there is actually strong science fiction precedent for this concept.

Comics legend Jack Kirby was obsessed with ancient astronaut theories manifested in works such as Thor, New Gods, and Eternals. However, Naruto’s specific vision differs crucially from Kirby’s vision.

While Kirby’s creations often depict advanced aliens as indifferent and aloof, the Otsutsuki clan are revealed to be actively evil planet-gatherers, more akin to Marvel’s world-eater Galactus.

Despite noble members like Hagoromo and Hamura, the clan’s overall goals are decidedly sinister: drain worlds of chakra to fuel their own power.

So while Kaguya herself was an obviously catastrophic threat as an individual, Boruto has further developed Otsutsuki as a continuing threat.

And unlike Kirby’s old space gods, they have hostile conquest and resource extraction firmly on their mind. This anchors the alien influence as a canonical pillar within the franchise rather than a unique anomaly.
