The official website for Kyoto Animation's Soundtrack! The Euphonium franchise announced a third season on Saturday, titled Sound! Euphonium 3 will premiere on April 7. The anime will air on Sundays at 5:00 pm JST on NHK Educational and will consist of 13 episodes.
To heighten anticipation, the first two episodes will have special screenings on March 16 in Tokyo and March 17 in Kyoto. Sound! Euphonium 3 will adapt Kumiko's experiences during her third year in high school. New character Mayu Kuro will be voiced by Haruka Tomatsu.
The original light novel author, Ayano Takeda, created the narrative in two novel volumes set for Kumiko's third year in high school. The first volume was released in April 2019, followed by the second volume in June 2019.
Spoiler alert: In the novels, the band's focus once again turns to winning the gold medal at Nationals. Kumiko takes on the role of new band president, with her ex-boyfriend Shuichi Tsukamoto serving as vice president and Reina Kousaka as drum major.
The narrative introduces new first-year students and transfer students, including Mayu Kuroe, a talented euphonium player from Sera Girls' School and a significant presence in the school competition circuit, particularly at Sapphire's former school.
Sound! The Euphonium franchise, known for its compelling narrative surrounding the Kitauji High School Concert Band, has a rich history in anime adaptations.
An initial 13-episode television series premiered in April 2015, followed by Gekijo-ban Hibike! Euphonium: Kitaouji Koko Suisogaku-bu e Yokoso “Flashback” in the film April 2016. A sequel, Sonic! Euphonium 2, consisting of 13 episodes, began in October 2016 with Gekijo-ban Hibike! Euphonium: Todoketai Melody compilation film was released in September 2017.
Expanding the narrative, a Liz and the Blue Bird film focusing on the characters of Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki premiered in Japan in April 2018. The next film, Sound! Euphonium the Movie – Our Promise: A Brand New Day, centered on Kumiko as a second year student in April 2019.
Kyoto Animation continues to captivate audiences with Tokubetsuhen Hibike! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest, a dramatic anime adaptation of the “Ensemble Concert” arc, debuted in 74 theaters in Japan on August 4, 2023. The film became the first new sequel anime for Sound in four years! Euphonium Franchise.
