Paul RuddKa is still king of the (ant) hill at the movies – defeating an agitated CGI bear… but the weekend’s victory isn’t what it seems, seeing a huge fall end his flurry.
We’re talking about “Ant-Man: Quantumania” – which came out last week with unexpected box office numbers ($106 million) and which once again topped the last 3 days at the domestic box office against newcomer With $32.2 million in ticket sales, “Cocaine Bear.”
The goofy horror-comedy, directed by Elizabeth Banks, came in second behind PR and co. … grossed $23.1M domestically and $28.4M globally – which is pretty cool considering it only cost $35M to make. So, it is sure that it will make its money back and then some.
Not exactly the hit that “M3GAN” was for Universal – but the studio killed it recently with original ideas and relatively little investment. However, ‘Ant-Man’ took a historic step.
Going from $106M to $32M in just one weekend is actually the biggest drop a Marvel movie has ever seen… like, ever. As Diversity As mentioned, it’s around 69%, more or less… beating the previous lowest record-holder in “Black Widow”, who came in at a 67% drop-off in ’21.
So, what are we doing with all this??? Well, from the outside looking in… it looks like Marvel may not be quite the bankable movie draw it once was (especially post-Avengers’), and unique concepts in Hollywood may actually be a winner with audiences. Are. Attention, execution!
