Did “Thappad” Spark Interest In Stuffed Academy Awards? Or is it certain to be telecast after last year’s surge in viewership re-Return to a new low?
After a 74 percent drop in viewership in more than a decade (to an all-time low of 10.4 million viewers in 2021), viewership for the Oscars is set to increase in 2022.With a telecast that brought back the concept of a host(s) and, yes, featured a physical feud between Will Smith and Chris Rock at 10 p.m.
All told, last year’s telecast attracted a total of 16.6 million viewers (live + same-day numbers), up 60 percent from the final count for 2021 — though still the second-smallest Oscars audience on record. In the demo, the NBC broadcast was up 73 percent with a 3.8 rating.
This year’s ceremony is being hosted by three-timer Jimmy Kimmel and will air on ABC (but isn’t live-streamable anywhere), and better nominees include Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water and award dear everything together everywhere,

Supporter: Jimmy Kimmel has dominated Hollywood’s biggest night twice before, and is known for not holding back or playing favorites when the zingers fly. Plus, there’s bound to be less awkward banter than last year’s hosting trio of Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and (the ever-polarizing) Amy Schumer.
Congress: The last time Kimmel hosted in 2018, he attempted a number of sucker stunts, including that whine where a bunch of stars barged into a theater across the street. That year’s Oscars ended up posting what was at the time the ceremony’s smallest audience: 26.5 million viewers.

In the Best Actress category, it’s a question whether Michelle Yeoh (eaoooo) will continue to ride its wave of recent victories, or get the best of Cate Blanchett or — in what will be the biggest gasp of the night — to leslieAndrea Riseborough, whose grassroots campaign strategy was accused of violating academy rules.
The supporting actress race, meanwhile, is poised to either give us the first winner from the MCU (wakanda foreverAngela Bassett of) or see eaooooJamie Lee Curtis’s well-earned between stories career.
